Free Pattern Friday: Raven Amigurumi REVAMP

A 7" tall amigurumi of a raven. The pattern is available on Ravelry or you can find it written below. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at icrochetthings@gmail.com.

Two patterns in one day? Nonsense.

Another revamp because that's my thing now, this time its of my old Raven pattern. Decided to remake it so it looks more like a real bird. It's also kind of Game of Thrones-y because of the three-eyed raven and all that. Only two eyes on this guy though. He's able to stand on his own, but you have to find that sweet spot and make sure to stuff the legs pretty well. In order to get the body to have a bird-like shape, I had to be a bit creative. The pattern looks complicated, take it slow and feel free to ask questions.

Here's a comparison pic:

*** More Detailed Instructions for Rounds 13 and 14

13. Do 15 sc as normal. Chain 7 and sc down the chains, back to the main piece. Resume single crocheting around the body for another 15 stitches. [sc, dec] six times until you reach the end of the round.
14. Do 15 sc as normal. Single crochet up the opposite side of the chains you made in the previous round. You should now be at the top of the chain extension. Single crochet back down the chain piece and back into the main piece. Do 33 sc as normal to the end of the round.

You should now have one piece with 54 stitches around. Proceed to round 15.

Basically the point of these rounds is to extend the length of the body to give it more of a bird shape. This is done using a chain extension that you incorporate into the rest of the piece, which adds an extra 12 stitches lengthwise onto the piece.

I hope this helps!

  3. I'm a little confused with head/body with step 13-14. In 14 do I now attach the chain to the full piece. Or do I keep crocheting around it? Because it says up one side?

    2. I just kept crocheting around , going up one side of the chains and back down the other side continuing around the rest of the row. You will see how it works as you finish the body. Keep checking your stitch count for each row. It was a little difficult for me to maintain the right number of stitches.

  4. Please could you help me because I like this pattern very much. I am stuck at row 13/14 too.
    Just like the person above.

  5. Hello, I'm also having trouble with row 13&14 of this pattern. Has anyone figured it out or heard from the author?

  6. Hello! Just want to let everyone who is having trouble with rounds 13 and 14 that I’ve made a more detailed explanation in my blog post that hopefully will help explain it better. While doing this I also noticed a small mathematical error and modified round 15 to accommodate. Apologies for the confusion!

    1. Thanks for the extra info. Close up pix would help to I think. :)

    2. I don't understand how this is supposed to work. I did 15 sc, ch 7, sc back down, and then did 14 sc around, and then had to do [sc, dc] 9 times just to finish at 48 stitches around. What did I do wrong?

  7. In Row 13 you start to work the back of the raven, after 15 sc (Do not trim the yarn) create 7 chains APART from your main piece, then sc in these chains, do one more sc back to the main piece. Finish the round with [sc, dec] six times.

row 14: 15 sc, then sc around this extension as many times as you need until you reach the main piece again, then 33 sc

Also, here is a graphic explanation in my twitter account:
    https://twitter.com/dianacc120/status/819666519894454272

Keep working the next rows normally

  9. The math here just isn't working. You state in your addendum that there are 60 stitches in the round after round 14. However this isn't reflected in the actual pattern. And when you say to do 42 st and 6 decreases in row 16, there are extra stitches left over. 42+12 = 54, not 60. Do we sc to the end of the round? Is this an error? Same for in row 13. Doing (sc, dec) 6 times leaves stitches unworked. However if I do (2 sc, dec) it works.

This is incredibly frustrating and I am no beginner. I really want to make this bird, but I don't want to rewrite the pattern to make it work.

    1. Okay, I've gone and made the pattern myself to double check. You're right that the addendum is incorrect and there should be 54 stitches at the end of round 14, not 60. I've gone ahead and fixed that. But if you follow the actual pattern and ignore the addendum then there shouldn't be a problem. There shouldn't be any extra stitches at the end of round 13; you work 15 sc, do the chain part, 15 more sc and then six [sc, dec]. 15 + 15 + 18 = 48, the number of stitches in round 12.

I hope this helps you and I apologize for the error and any frustration stemming from it. I guess in trying to explain myself I just made it more confusing. :P

  10. This is adorable and I MUST make one asap. I just wanted to comment that I've made other small crocheted critters in the past and have made them bendable by crocheting around twisted-together pipe cleaners. Simply form a bunch of pipe cleaners into the general shape you want and bend them back on themselves so there are no sharp cut-wire ends. Then crochet around them, adding small bits of stuffing as you go to pad them. This might work well with the feet of your raven to make him pose-able, and also to help him stand up. I plan to add a tail to mine, which may also help counterbalance that beak and help to make it stand up better.

  11. What do you mean by ‘ turn ‘ it confuses me, and how did it go from say 24 down to 12?

    ReplyDelete
  12. ím also a bit confused by „turn“ in row 5 of the beak? could you help me here please? thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  13. By turn it means to reverse your work, crochet back over what you just crocheted. Rather than continue working in the round. It helps to shape the beak right.

  15. Um why does it only have 3 toes? Crows and ravens have 4.

  16. I am so stuck, sorry to be a pest. I have tried to do the chain 7 bit and I just can't get my head round it. I tried to get on your twitter and it isn't showing. Help please!!! Thankyou so much for sharing this pattern. I have dislexia so reading patterns is a challenge so I love tutorial videos, it's been such a huge help. If you could send me pictures even that would help. I'm making this for a small child, with everything being made with yarn. I appreciate any help you can give me. Kindest regards, Lisa x

In row 13 after chain 7, sc 6 down the left side of the chain, skipping the last chain you made. To clarify, the 7th chain is skipped, leaving you to sc down the 6th, 5th ... 1st chain.

In row 14, when it says to sc up the chain, you sc 6 up the right side of the chain. Once again you ignore the 7th chain of row 13, and just start your 33sc on the sc you did in row 13 that was done on the 6th chain

  19. Great bird :D I hope the many questions about the pattern will not be too discouraging. I myself know how frustrated I can get why I am following a pattern with new technique, but that frustration should not land on you. A lot of lovely messages too though.
The bird is very cute, and everybody loves a free pattern. Thanks for sharing <3

  20. Hey, could I make a tutorial on youtube for this pattern (with proper crediting) and link this pattern at the end? It may be modified by a couple stitches but otherwise the same and I absolutely love the pattern (it was difficult to find, like a gemstone in a field of options). Favorite bird pattern to make between the couple I have played with.

ya, just let me know if I can, I wont be doing anything until I get the author's concent.

  21. I've been working on this pattern for 3 days and cant seem to get past row 13 like everyone else, the only difference is I got a stitch count of 53, after adding them all up before doing the row. then I added them all up for row 14 and got 60, so I think the stitch count is off. I'm not sure what to do about it cause I was making this raven on a deadline :/

  22. For those also struggling with this gorgeous pattern. I had to make an adjustment of a single stitch decrease in order to make it work for me, and have tried to clearly explain what I have figured out on the areas I struggled.

    11. Where I was going wrong started at row 11, my fault entirely, I missed that it said to only sc6, inc THREE times, rather than all the way around. After those three times you finish the row with 21sc. (45)

    12. On row 12 you must be careful to do the same, and only do sc7, inc three times also, finishing the row again with a straight run of 21sc. (48)

    13. 15sc, ch7. Using the 7th ch as a turning point, sc6 into the left side of the remaining 6 of your chain. Sc to join this ‘tag’ back to the main body of the crow, into the stitch directly to the left of the one where you stopped scing and began to chain. The section of chained work should now stick out from the rest of your work at a right angle, like the post of a capital ’T’ that is upside down. Sc in the next 14 st, (the sc that you used to reattach the chain is the secret ‘15th stitch’ that makes this symmetrical with the other side.) Then do a pattern of sc, dec six times (55 including the stitches of the ‘tag’)

    14. Sc in each stitch, except the final two which you use a dec to turn into one stitch. As you go around, at the ‘tag’ make sure to be getting all six stitches, one on top, and six down the other side of your tag. (I found it very easy to miss stitches in this part, and had to be very careful.) If you want to break it down, it should be 15 sc before you reach the tag, six sc up the right hand side of the tag, one sc at the peak of the tag, six sc down the left side of the tag, and then 25 sc and finish with a solitary dec. (54)

    15. Sc in each stitch. (54)

Follow the rest of pattern as written!
